Pawn of Prophecy

by David Eddings

Book One of The Belgariad

1. Pawn of Prophecy
2. Queen of Sorcery
3. Magician’s Gambit
4. Castle of Wizardry
5. Enchanters’ End Game

Introducing a series chock-full of characters that you won’t be able to forget… I know I can’t. David Eddings brings his books to life more than almost any other author I have ever read. With that said, here is the story-line.

Long ago, so the Storyteller claimed, the evil God Torak sought dominion and drove men and Gods to war. But Belgarath the Sorcerer led men to reclaim the Orb that protected men of the West. So long as it lay at Riva, the prophecy went, men would be safe.

But that was only a story, and Garion did not believe in magic dooms, even though the dark mean without a shadow had haunted him for years. Brought up on a quiet farm by his Aunt Pol, how could he know that the Apostate planned to wake dread Torak, or that he would be led on a quest of unparalleled magic and danger by those he loved - but did not know?

For a while, his dreams of innocence were safe, untroubled by knowledge of his strange heritage. For a little while…

Personal Rating: 8.5
Pawn of Prophecy is exactly my kind of fantasy - pure, unadulterated fantasy. Rogues, sorcerers, magicians in hiding until fate calls them out. As I mentioned before, the character are real and I was hooked from page one, all the way through Book 5, and then onto the next series, The Mallorean. The reason that this rating is not a 9 is that the characters seem to be so powerful that they shouldn’t have gotten caught in half of the situations they were in… but then maybe the book wouldn’t be so interesting…

Content Rating: E
As every fantasy book should be, Pawn of Prophecy is enjoyable to fantasy fans of every age. I can imagine myself at age 80 still enjoying it.
