The Magician’s Guild
Book One of The Black Magician Trilogy
1. The Magician’s Guild
2. The Novice
3. The High Lord
“…What the Magician’s Guild has long dreaded has finally come to pass. There is someone outside their ranks who possesses a raw power beyond imagining, an untrained mage who must be found and schooled before she destroys herself and her city with a force she cannot yet control.”
Sonea is used to running… familiar with hiding herself away. She is, after all, a slum-dweller. She had struck a magician with a stone and watched as their combined forces murdered a young boy only a few paces from her. So when the Magician’s Guild begins searching for her, she knows only fear.
The Magician’s Guild knows that if Sonea can not learn control, then her powers will eventually destroy her as well as the city around her. They seek to find her and teach her control before such an event can happen.
With the Magicians searching the slums for Sonea, her friends hide her in the Thieves Underground. With the protection of the head Thief, Sonea continues to practice magic, unaware that each burst of power is a signal to her location. Her capture is inevitable, but will the magicians find her in time?
Can Sonea trust the magicians to teach her Control, especially after discovering a deadly secret about the High Lord of the Magician’s Guild? Will she continue to stay with the Guild or escape back to the slums? Will Lord Fergun succeed in his plan to blackmail Sonea though the price to pay could mean the life of her friend?

I picked this trilogy up at Bookmans last weekend and I have to say that I was in for a most pleasant surprise. I was starting to wonder where all of the good books were at! Kudos to Ms. Canavan for creating a world of suspense, magic, and believable characters. While a bit predictable at times, I recommend this book highly to anyone looking for a good adventure.

If you’re old enough to read ‘grown-up’ books without any pictures then I think that you will enjoy The Magician’s Guild. There is, as to be expected in most fantasies, mild violence, but no other contrary characteristics.
